Amid China’s growing global prominence, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other world leaders have gathered in the Russian city of Kazan for a summit. The summit is part of the BRICS bloc alliance of developing economies, whose main objective is to establish a balance in the global economic and political landscape, especially balancing the influence of Western countries. The event is also considered an important platform for Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he will try to show the failure of Western attempts to isolate Russia, especially in the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In this three-day meeting, Putin will hold about 20 bilateral talks, which is an effort to further strengthen Russia’s diplomatic relations. During this summit, Putin will also communicate with the United Nations, in which issues related to global peace and security will be discussed. During his address at the opening ceremony of this conference being held in Kazan, Putin welcomed other leaders and said, “I am grateful that you accepted our invitation and personally appeared in Kazan. This summit provides us with a historic opportunity to set new guidelines for the global order. We will take a number of important decisions today, aimed at further strengthening economic and political integration among member countries.”

The Russian President further said, “BRICS is a multifaceted platform that provides a strong framework for global development. We have a deep mutual relationship, which we have developed over decades, and today we are working towards strengthening it further. I have no hesitation in saying that at present, relations between Russia and China have become one of the main pillars of stability in the modern world.” Putin particularly praised relations with China and said, “Our Chinese friends are extremely important to us. Recently we have celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations, and this partnership has now reached its highest level.”

He also said, “Over the past 75 years, Russia-China relations have presented a model that can be considered a model of stability and cooperation on the world stage. We have not only strengthened our economic and political ties over the years, but also built a strong partnership on global platforms. This cooperation is an important factor not only for Russia and China, but also for global stability and security.”

Taking forward the dialogue and discussions with other leaders participating in the summit, Putin also said, “Our aim is to build a fair and balanced global order, which respects the interests of all countries and is not dominated by any one country or group. We have to ensure that we further deepen coordination and cooperation among all member countries, so that we can ensure global security and build a fair, balanced world order.”

Putin’s statement comes at a time when Russia is facing Western sanctions and pressure. At such a time, Russia’s strategy is to show that it is not only active on the global stage, but is also able to further strengthen relations with its key partners. The BRICS Summit has become a platform to present this vision where economies of developing countries are being brought together on one platform and presented as a strong alternative.

While concluding the summit, Putin also said in his address, “We should use this platform to set new norms of global development. We have an opportunity which we can use to play a permanent and strong role in the global economy and politics. Whatever decision we take in this summit will mark the beginning of a new era not only for the member countries but for the entire world.”

Thus, this BRICS Summit held in Kazan is an important platform not only for Russia but also for other developing countries where they can further strengthen their economic and political relations and find new ways towards a fair global order.
